IRRI medium-term plan 2002-2004

The medium-term plan (MTP) for 2002-2004 reflects IRRI’s core agenda in addressing current and emerging problems in Asia, where more than 90% of the world’s rice will be consumed by 2010. It is based on the strategy outlined in the document IRRI Toward 2020 published in 1996. In this MTP, we will continue our project portfolio that is built on the continuum of strategic to applied research.

In response to the recommendation of the Board of Trustees' Program Committee during its September 1999 meeting, IRRI management initiated in early 2000 a comprehensive strategic planning process to refine the focus of its research program. This development was indicated to the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the CGIAR when IRRI submitted its rolling Medium-Term Plan (MTP) for 2001-2003.

The Institute aimed to develop a new structure of four programs encompassing 12 projects that would be more conducive to efficient allocation of resources. The overall goal is still to improve the well-being of low-income rice producers and consumers while conserving the natural resource base by taking full advantage of advances in science to address emerging development concerns. IRRI also seeks to build stronger linkages with its outposted staff as well as with National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems (NARES) to fast-track impact.
